Kevin Williamson first found the premise too close to Twilight. Julie Plec persuaded him to read L. J. Smith's books, and he came to see them as a story about a small town and what lies under its surface.

The CW green-lit the pilot on 6 February 2009 and ordered the series on 19 May 2009. After strong early ratings, the first season was extended to a full 22 episodes on 21 October 2009.

The pilot drew 4.91 million viewers, the largest series premiere The CW had had at the time. With DVR viewing the figure rose to 5.7 million.

The pilot was filmed in Vancouver. Everything after it was shot in Covington, Georgia, which stood in for Mystic Falls, and in other towns around Atlanta, for the state's tax incentives.

On 6 April 2015 Nina Dobrev confirmed that she and Michael Trevino would leave after the sixth season. She recorded a voice-over for the season 7 finale and came back as a guest for the series finale.

On 23 July 2016 The CW announced that the eighth season, with 16 episodes, would be the last. It ran from 21 October 2016 to 10 March 2017.

The Originals follows the Mikaelson family — Klaus, Elijah and Rebekah — in New Orleans. Legacies is set at the Salvatore School and follows Hope Mikaelson and Alaric's twin daughters.
