From pilot to series
The CW green-lit the pilot on 6 February 2009 and ordered the series on 19 May 2009. After strong early ratings, the first season was extended to a full 22 episodes on 21 October 2009.

The CW's biggest premiere
The pilot drew 4.91 million viewers, the largest series premiere The CW had had at the time. With DVR viewing the figure rose to 5.7 million.

Vancouver, then Georgia
The pilot was filmed in Vancouver. Everything after it was shot in Covington, Georgia, which stood in for Mystic Falls, and in other towns around Atlanta, for the state's tax incentives.

The Mystic Grill fire
On the morning of 10 May 2012 a fire broke out in the building on Clark Street in Covington that was used as the Mystic Grill.

Elena leaves after season 6
On 6 April 2015 Nina Dobrev confirmed that she and Michael Trevino would leave after the sixth season. She recorded a voice-over for the season 7 finale and came back as a guest for the series finale.
